Beezly was kind enough to let me play with his toys recently. In particular, he’s got a shiny new digital SLR camera. I thought it would be interesting to compare its output with that from my five year old consumer digital camera. (1.3 Megapixels, no less!)
Here’s the picture from Beezly’s camera.

The difference is quite obvious. The SLR image is sharper, partly because the lens can be focused, but also because the larger light input allows for a shorter exposure time. (In fact, this camera is working under worse conditions, inside hiding under the table vs outside in the daytime) The colour definition is also better; my camera has difficulty producing good colours in anything other than bright sunlight. I would think this is down to the quality of the CCD array. The cheaper camera is probably using a CMOS sensor.
In conclusion, time to start saving my pennies.

Actually, the sensor in my camera is CMOS too – DPReview has more info on the specs. I think that the difference between CMOS and CCD sensors is a bit swings-and-roundabouts nowadays (at least for “normal” photography).
