Beezly was kind enough to let me play with his toys recently. In particular, he’s got a shiny new digital SLR camera. I thought it would be interesting to compare its output with that from my five year old consumer digital camera. (1.3 Megapixels, no less!)
Here’s the picture from Beezly’s camera.
Here’s the picture from my camera.
The difference is quite obvious. The SLR image is sharper, partly because the lens can be focused, but also because the larger light input allows for a shorter exposure time. (In fact, this camera is working under worse conditions, inside hiding under the table vs outside in the daytime) The colour definition is also better; my camera has difficulty producing good colours in anything other than bright sunlight. I would think this is down to the quality of the CCD array. The cheaper camera is probably using a CMOS sensor.
In conclusion, time to start saving my pennies.
Well, I didn’t get around to doing more updates for the three peaks challenge, mainly because there is no mobile reception at Wasdale Head and by the time we got to Snowdon I was too tired! Anyway, a select few photos are available for you to peruse at will.
Annie, Emma, Laura and Sarah are up Ben Nevis at the moment, having set off at 16:19 on the 3 Peaks Challenge. So, with nothing to do, I’ve been listening to Radio 2 and organising the route down to Wasdale Head on the way. More updates on the way!
Well, I’ve set off on my little trek of the UK – setting off yesterday at about 10am with my friend Simon in the direction of Southampton, via my old workplace in Surrey. I popped in to say hello to my old boss, but unfortunately he was out. I’ll have to try and catch up with him some other time.
Today I have a meeting at Southampton Uni with the LIN group. Southampton is a pretty awkward place to organise these meetings, considering it’s a nation-wide group, and Southampton is on the South coast, but the journey was OK and it’s ended up meaning that I get to visit a few people en-route.
This evening I’m off to stay with Annie, Belle and Tom PP in London… under the hospitality of Eleanor, who is staying with them until I give her a lift back to Holmfirth on Thursday. Thursday will be a long day, as I have to drive from London to Ben Nevis, via Holmfirth, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
Something amusing happened this evening. Whilst on the way to Vox for a drink I spotted a couple of fire engines surrounding one of the automated toilets on Market Street (opposite Sainsburys). It seems the techno-loo had captured one of it’s customers and refused to let go. The local fire service had to be called to release the poor man!
Ok – so I met up with some friends on Saturday, had some coffee and a panini and then went for a wander around Digley Reservoir on Saturday. I managed to capture this picture which I’d intended to take in colour, but accidentally left my camera in black and white. I think I prefer it black and white ![]()
